Births Beyond Belief, a reality program created and produced by local company, Video Arts Studios, airs on Discovery Health June 16th at 7pm CST. The show explores the ups and downs of homebirth by following three separate mothers in Hawaii, Los Angeles, and New Jersey.

Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher’s full time chef, Grace GlennAnthony, pursued a home birth with their support. The Video Arts crew documented Grace working in the celebrities’ Beverly Hills home. Grace’s baby was in the breech position making homebirth an illegal option according to California law. She was forced to choose between sacrificing her dream birth and breaking the law.

Hawaii couple, Jason and Kollette Stith, gave birth on their organic coffee bean farm deep in the mountains in a Mongolian tent known as a yurt. The delivery was complicated by the fact that their remote location is only accessible by four-wheel drive vehicles and does not have running water or electricity.

A New Jersey couple, Soyini and Esu Ma’at, were expecting their second child. The Video Arts crew documented Soyini in a temple in Brooklyn using sacred Egyptian meditations to prepare for birth. The birth took a dramatic turn when Soyini requested to move from the floor of her bedroom to a birthing tub to deliver after the baby’s head had crowned.

“In this age of healthcare reform, homebirth has become a trend on the rise. More and more mothers are using midwives to help them give birth at home naturally. The mothers’ desire to give birth at home stems from the belief that the first few moments of their child’s life is crucial to the formation of their personality as an adult. The mother’s felt empowered by restoring the intended process of childbirth by avoiding the hospital. For them, the comfort of being at home surrounded by friends is worth forgoing the medical model of childbirth care in the United States,” says producer, Zach Marion.

Video Arts Studios has been operating in the Fargo market for nearly twenty-seven years. Their longevity is two fold. “Our staff is all in house as opposed to freelancers. If we need to collaborate to solve a problem, we walk down the hall instead of driving across town or getting on the subway,” says President, Art Phillips. “Local clients are still and will continue to be the mainstay of our business,” says Vice President, Mary Ann Phillips.

Video Arts Studios has been producing shows for network cable TV for nearly five years. Their first project was a series they created and produced for Discovery Health called House of Babies. The program, a reality series about a midwifery clinic in Miami, made a twenty-six episode run. This year, the company finished their fifth and sixth episode of MonsterQuest, one of History Channel’s highest rated programs. The fifth episode was the second highest rated episode of all time for the series.
