Wheat industry opportunities and challenges will be discussed during the North Dakota Wheat Commission’s (NDWC) annual meeting for county representatives on Dec. 2-3 in Mandan, N.D.

The meeting will open with presentations on market trends and volatility and then shift focus to research currently being conducted for wheat with check-off investment, as well as future research needs and opportunities. The NDWC has 53 county representatives elected by the state’s wheat producers.

The meeting will open with a luncheon on Dec. 2 at the Seven Seas Inn, featuring comments by NDWC Chairman Harlan Klein and U.S. Wheat Associates vice chair Janice Mattson, as well as an industry panel discussion on volatility in the market and its impact on producers, customers and consumers.

The first day will conclude with discussion on demand and export sales opportunities for HRS and durum in the Central and South American region.

Neal Fisher, NDWC administrator, will present information on the Wheat Commission programs and the state of the wheat industry the morning of Dec. 3, followed by an assessment of producer funded wheat research at North Dakota State University.

The N.D. Grain Growers Association and U.S. Durum Growers Association will provide updates to the NDWC county representatives on their domestic policy activities for the past year.

The meeting will close with district roundtable discussion of important issues facing the wheat industry and a discussion of NDWC program priorities for the upcoming year.
