Moorhead, MN - American Crystal Sugar Co. growers may have to destroy up to 10 percent of their sugar beet acres to help manage the crop.

The cooperative's president, David Berg, says the board of directors decided to ask growers to identify "up to 10 percent" of acres that may have to be destroyed to avoid processing losses in the spring.

A final decision is expected in a few months.

Destroying the beets helps prevent them from spoiling and helps the company avoid the cost of disposal.

American Crystal has projected a harvest of about 420,000 acres, or about 80,000 fewer acres than last year. Berg says a recent sample indicated a higher yield than earlier projected.

Crystal has plants in Moorhead, East Grand Forks and Crookston in Minnesota and in Drayton and Hillsboro in North Dakota.
